Medical Scholarship Recipients

Congratulations on receiving a scholarship from the UVM Larner College of Medicine. Click here for information about your scholarship, including the individual/s to whom you should write your note (if applicable). We hope you enjoy learning about the donors who made this support of your medical education possible.

Hearing from you is the best reward that donors to scholarship funds can receive for their generosity and support. Additionally, your contact with them can help ensure continued support for scholarships next year and beyond. 

SAYING “THANK YOU” IS EASY:

1. For your convenience, you may stop by the Medical Development & Alumni Office (Given Courtyard N-300) to pick up note cards (one of your own is fine too) and/or to drop off your note. If you’d prefer, you can email your note to Emily.Stoehr@uvmhealth.org.
   
   
2. Refer to the scholarship descriptions here for information on the donor of your scholarship. Talk about yourself and let them know what scholarship support means to you. See ideas & tips below.
   
   
3. When we send your letter along to the recipient, we will include your class composite photo; if you have an additional or preferable photo, please provide one.
   
   
4. Drop your note off at the Alumni Office in the Given Courtyard, N-300, or mail it to the address below. You may also email your letter to Emily.Stoehr@uvmhealth.org. Either way, we’ll forward your letter on to the donor. We want to make sure all of the generous alumni and friends supporting our students hear from scholarship recipients as soon as possible.

Letter-writing ideas & tips

• Send either a hand-written card or a typed letter. (You may stop by the alumni office to pick one up.).
• Your composite photo will be included, unless you submit another one that is preferable.
• Tell the donor about yourself. Where you are from? What year are you in Medical School? Why did you decide to become a physician?
• Tell the donor how much you appreciate their support. What does this scholarship mean to you? How is the scholarship making a difference in your life and for your family?
• Talk about your medical school experience so far. Why did you select UVM? What professors or courses have influenced you the most? What specialty/ies are you considering?
• Mention your extra-curricular and community service activities, special interests, internships or study abroad experiences.
• Refer to the information provided in your award letter about the donor and his or her goals in establishing the scholarship.
• In some cases you are not writing to the donor but to one of their descendants. Adjust your message accordingly. You can refer to how appreciative you are for the scholarship and how the scholarship helps carry on the legacy of the donor or the person for whom the scholarship is named.
• Remember that in most cases you are writing to an individual who has made a personal contribution to create your scholarship; many of these individuals are alumni themselves, and they place a high value on making a personal connection with students.
• Consider including your CV and/or personal statement for applying to residency programs.
