Biomedical Engineer Presents Research Laureate Lecture

A world-class researcher with expertise in lung mechanics, Professor of Medicine Jason Bates, Ph.D., Sc.D., will present the 2018 Research Laureate lecture, titled “A Physicist’s Approach to the Lung,” on Monday, April 8 at noon in the Sullivan Classroom in the Medical Education Center.

A professor of medicine, Bates joined UVM in 1999. His research has helped clarify the link between lung structure and function in health and disease and contributed to roughly 400 peer-reviewed journal articles, dozens of book chapters, and the textbook Lung Mechanics: An Inverse Modeling Approach. He invented the Flexivent ventilator—used worldwide in mouse model studies of lung disease—and is an elected Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, the Biomedical Engineering Society, and American Thoracic Society, and deputy editor of the Journal of Applied Physiology.

Virtual Admissions Fair Draws over 900 Visitors to Larner “Booth”

This video welcomed medical school prospective applicants to the Larner College of Medicine during the fourth annual Virtual Medical School Fair, hosted this February by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). The annual fair connects representatives from 70 medical schools with thousands of prospective students, and the Larner team included three admissions team members and 10 medical students, who greeted 917 visitors to the virtual booth.

Expertise in Diversity & Cultural Competency Training Puts VT LEND in National Spotlight

Housed in the Department of Pediatrics and supported by the Health Resources & Services Administration since 1995, the Vermont Leadership Education on Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (VT LEND) program sets the standard nationally for how to train culturally competent health professionals who are poised to improve healthcare systems for children with developmental and intellectual disabilities. VT LEND is one of 52 LEND programs nationwide and a member of the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD). In 2018, the program received the AUCD Multicultural Council Award for Leadership in Diversity, and over the past year, has become a sought-after national advisor, providing consultation and training for 20 of its sister organizations on such topics as social justice in health care, addressing health disparities, as well as cultural and linguistic competence. Dr. Beatty
Dennis Beatty, M.D., assistant professor of medicine, was recently appointed to the Association of American Medical Colleges Council on Faculty and Academic Sciences (CFAS). CFAS, which includes more than 350 faculty representatives appointed by member medical schools and academic societies, is a "strong voice for academic faculty within the AAMC’s governance and leadership structures."

Stacey Sigmon, Ph.D., associate professor of psychiatry, has been elected president of the College of Problems on Drug Dependence (CPDD) for a one-year term beginning in 2020. The oldest and largest organization in the U.S. dedicated to advancing a scientific approach to substance use and addictive disorders, CPDD’s mission is to "provide a national and international forum for scientists of diverse backgrounds to advance the understanding of molecular-neurobiological aspects of addictive disorders," as well as develop treatments.
Dr. Li
Assistant Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics Dawei Li, Ph.D., with colleague Malav Trivedi, Ph.D., an assistant professor at Nova Southeastern University, recently received a 2018 Ramsay Award from the Solve ME/CFS Initiative to conduct innovative research in the field of myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) - a condition previously called chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). He and Trivedi will be collaborating with colleagues at Université de Montréal, Stanford University, Harvard University, and University of Utah with a long-term goal of establishing genetic markers, and, ultimately, a treatment for ME/CFS.
