Fung Named Inaugural Korson Green & Gold Professor of Pathology
Mark K. Fung, M.D., Ph.D., professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the Larner College of Medicine, was invested as the inaugural Roy Korson, M.D. and Lorraine Korson, M.S. Green & Gold Professor of Pathology at a formal ceremony held in the Hoehl Gallery on August 5.
The professorship was established by the late Roy and Lorraine Korson, both of whom enjoyed long careers at the College of Medicine—Lorraine as a researcher in the Departments of Biochemistry and Pathology in the 1950s, and Roy as a clinical pathologist at the College of Medicine and what was then the Mary Fletcher Hospital (now UVM Medical Center), following his service in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during WWII and the Korean War, through his retirement in 1992. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Korson conducted research on the basic mechanisms of carcinogenesis and was recognized as an outstanding teacher.
A nationally recognized expert in transfusion medicine, Fung is director of the HLA/Histocompatibility Laboratory and the Stem Cell Processing Laboratory in the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at the UVM Medical Center. His past leadership roles have included vice chair for quality and clinical affairs in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and president of the UVM Medical Center’s medical staff. He has also served on the Board of Trustees for the UVM Medical Center and the UVM Health Network, on the UVM Health Network Medical Group Board of Directors. Read more about the Fung investiture.

Sadigh Makes "Climb for a Cause" Trek Up Kilimanjaro
Majid Sadigh, M.D., director of the Global Health Program at the Larner College of Medicine and Western Connecticut Health Network (WCHN), and his daughters Katrin Sadigh, M.D., and Mitra Sadigh, started their 19,341-foot journey up Mount Kilimanjaro on July 28, reaching the summit on August 2. Dr. Sadigh, who has climbed Kilimanjaro four times before, is leading this second annual #ClimbForACause fundraiser to support a training program offered through WCHN’s Nursing Division for nurses from international global health partner sites. JumpStart VIC Brings Incoming Class of 2023 Students to Campus
For years, incoming medical students have been accessing the JumpStart VIC (Vermont Integrated Curriculum) program to refresh their knowledge, but this year, enrolled Class of 2023 students had a new option—to participate in person. In July, eight students attended daily active learning sessions from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., while another 84 participated online through VIC Portal. Led by Professor of Biochemistry Paula Tracy, Ph.D., and Associate Professor of Biochemistry Stephen Everse, Ph.D., the program begins with a practice test and features more than 1,000 questions covering several domains featured in the MCAT, such as cellular metabolism, general biochemistry and techniques, and genetics. Students can review the material and test themselves with continual quizzes to ensure comprehension. The goal? To prepare these students for the Readiness Exam they'll take on day one of the Foundations of Clinical Science course.
Larner Community Enjoys Annual Ice Cream Social
The line for ice cream stretched from the Hoehl Gallery to the Medical Education Center building on July 31 at the College of Medicine Annual Ice Cream Social in celebration of the past year’s accomplishments. Amid hundreds of upbeat, smiling attendees, two shifts of scoopers, including Deans Rick Page, Christa Zehle, Claude Deschamps, Brian Cote, Katie Huggett, Charlie Irvin, Kim Luebbers and Shaden Eldakar-Hein, along with Chief Development Officer Kevin McAteer and Director of Active Learning Jesse Moore, went through nearly 28 gallons of ice cream in a single hour, with Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough in the lead as the favorite, seconded by Phish Food. The pulmonary fibrosis support group has been much more than I expected. The speakers that have been scheduled have been terrific, starting with the researchers, and most recently, the oxygen therapy experts.

Laurie Gelles, M.A, Ph.D., Education Technology Team Lead, Technology Services
Laurie Gelles joined the Technology Services office in November 2016 after working as a middle school teacher and integration technology specialist in Mill Valley, Calif. She holds three education degrees—a B.S., an M.A., and a Ph.D. from UVM—and working with faculty and learners comes naturally to her.
Whether it’s ensuring smooth educational technology operation, helping faculty incorporate innovative elements into their teaching, leading strategic planning meetings on curriculum delivery and support, or working with students, her main goal is to help people see how technology can be a benefit.
“I try to help people operationalize ideas that they think might be helpful in teaching,” says Dr. Gelles, adding that she likes working with a mix of people and trying to find ways to use technology to support the curriculum.
"Laurie brings an amazing combination of skills—deep technical knowledge, as well as scholarship in multisensory learning–to her work," says Jill Jemison, chief information officer for health sciences, who adds that Dr. Gelles was recognized by her peers with election as co-chair of the Association of American Medical Colleges Group on Information Resources' national Education Technology Working Group.
Accolades & Appointments
Allen Mead, M.H.S.A., director of the Medicine Health Care Service for the UVM Health Network Medical Group, is the president-elect for AIM (Administrators of Internal Medicine) for 2020. In this role, he will not only serve as a leader for AIM, he will also be a member of the Board of Directors of the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM), an organization with more than 11,000 members in departments of Internal Medicine in the U.S. and Canada.
Assistant Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics Julie Dragon, Ph.D., was appointed director of the Vermont Integrative Genomics Resource (VIGR), the primary genomics and bioinformatics shared resource on campus. Dr. Dragon has been director of the Bioinformatics Shared Resource since 2014, and in 2017 assisted in the merger with the Advanced Genome Technology Core, to create VIGR and offer complete wrap-around support, from experimental design to data analysis, for genomics-based research.
Vicki Hart, M.S., Ph.D. has joined the UVM Master of Public Health Program as an epidemiologist and data expert, with an appointment as an assistant professor of pediatrics. Hart brings more than 15 years of experience in survey design and data analysis to her role. She is currently teaching a course in epidemiology and will teach both epidemiology and biostatistics this fall.
Associate Dean for Students and Interim Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education Christa Zehle, M.D., has been appointed as the Northeast Group on Student Affairs (GSA) representative to the Association of American Medical Colleges Committee on Student Affairs (COSA) Working Group on Medical Student Well-being. As the Northeast GSA representative, Zehle will identify topics of national concern related to the well-being of medical students, and work to develop interventions and resources that address these issues.
