Larner Plays Significant Role in UVM's All-Time High in FY22 Research Funding
University of Vermont faculty and staff attracted over a quarter-billion dollars in research funding in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2022, reaching a new all-time high.The Larner College of Medicine had another impressive year of research growth, with over $117.9 million of research awards, including more than $108 million in federal grants and another $9.8 million in funding through the UVM Foundation. This support is funding projects that address the ever-evolving healthcare challenges of Vermont and beyond. Recent grants directly support the Vermont Center for Cardiovascular and Brain Health, the Vermont Center on Behavior and Health, and the UVM Center for Biomedical Shared Resources.
In total, the Larner College of Medicine earned 400 research awards in fiscal year 2022, more than 50 percent of UVM’s 798 total awards. Medical and Grad Students Tackle Summer Research Projects
Graduate and medical students alike dug into a wide range of challenging and important health topics while conducting research over the past couple of months.As the inaugural UVM Cancer Center Juckett Scholar, Cellular, Molecular, and Biomedical Sciences doctoral candidate Shannon Prior investigated metastatic spread of non-small cell lung cancer. Working with David Seward, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, and Paula Deming, Ph.D., associate professor of biomedical and health sciences, she specifically looked at how glutamine availability impacts cancer progression. Read the full article about Prior's summer research.Richard Vuong, a Larner Class of 2025 medical student, worked with Mitchell Tsai, M.D., MMM, professor of anesthesiology, to explore the ability of medical school graduates to repay their student loans. By comparing medical school default rates across various demographics and schools for the past nine years, Vuong uncovered discrepancies in default rates across ethnic and geographic differences. He hopes that this project will facilitate the reconsideration of the current policy of higher interest rates for medical and graduate students, which could benefit millions of student borrowers. Read more about Vuong's and other medical students' summer projects.Class of 2025 medical student Ryan Kamkar, under the mentorship of Thomas Delaney, Ph.D., associate professor of pediatrics, used data from the Centers for Disease Control Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System to analyze risk factors including nutrition, access to mental health education and resources, and safe community spaces, and to assess their impacts on the overall health of LGBTQ-identifying youth. Working with Mark Fung, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, Class of 2025 medical student Karena Nguyen assessed health disparities pertaining to breast cancer screenings among Black, Indigenous and People of Color in Vermont. Center on Aging Joins Age-Friendly University Global Network
Through the University of Vermont Center on Aging, UVM is now part of the Age-Friendly University (AFU) network of institutions of higher education around the globe that have endorsed the 10 AFU principles and committed to becoming more age-friendly in their programs and policies.The alliance will support UVM as it broadens efforts to prepare students to be engaged citizens and work with Vermont’s aging population. UVM is expanding intergenerational activities such as the Grand Friends Program to boost the psychological, physical and social well-being of a broader audience and to help reduce ageism.AFU’s 10 principles address opportunities and responsibilities that span the breadth of university activities and align with UVM’s Academic Success Goal priorities. Medical students Sydney Cardozo ’24 (top left) and Brittney Palermo ’25 (bottom left), along with Professor of Obstetrics and Reproductive Sciences Stephen Brown, M.D., participated in a reproductive liberty roundtable discussion hosted by Congressman Peter Welch. Amelia Lamberty, a graduate student in the Master of Science in Pathology program, recently defended her thesis. Working with her mentor, Brian Cunniff, Ph.D., assistant professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, Lamberty investigated the role of Miro1-mediated mitochondrial positioning in allergen-induced inflammation in lung epithelial cells.

Daniel Weiss, M.D., Ph.D., professor of medicine, recently received a three-year $1.5 million-dollar grant from the National Science Foundation, titled “Defining Environmental Design Criteria for Directed Differentiation of Type 1 from Type 2 Lung Alveolar Epithelial Cells.”
