Stanford’s Aslakson Appointed UVM Chair of Anesthesiology
Stanford University School of Medicine anesthesiologist and expert in palliative care Rebecca Aslakson, M.D., Ph.D., has been appointed as the next chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at the Larner College of Medicine, effective September 1, 2022. In her new role, Dr. Aslakson will lead a department of 59 faculty, 32 Advanced Practice Providers, 25 residents, 2 fellows, and 22 staff whose mission is to deliver state-of-the-art anesthesia services to patients, conduct groundbreaking research, and provide exceptional education to the next generation of anesthesiology providers.
A Fellow of both the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) and the American College of Critical Care Medicine, Dr. Aslakson has been recognized nationally with a 2015 Early Career Investigator Award from the AAHPM, the 2014 Presidential Scholar Award from the American Society of Anesthesiologists, and the 2019 Grenvik Award for Ethics from the Society of Critical Care Medicine.

Polly Parsons, M.D.: Looking Back & Moving Forward after 22 Years at UVM
On July 11, E.L. Amidon Chair and Professor of Medicine Polly Parsons, M.D., began the transition to her new role as president and CEO of the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM). Dr. Parsons retains her duties as department chair before fully transitioning to her new position on October 1, 2022.Dr. Parsons came to the University of Vermont in 2000 as a professor of medicine and director of pulmonary and critical care medicine. She became interim chair of medicine in 2005, and in 2006 she was named to the endowed Amidon Chair.
In a recent interview, Dr. Parsons reflected on her 16 years at the helm of the department, reviewed her accomplishments and considered the department’s growth, struggles and triumphs. She talked about the department's expansion, with new divisions, additional faculty, a broader spectrum of clinical services, and increased educational initiatives. She discussed the department's increased scholarly output, both in the number of individuals involved in research and in the diversity of academic pursuits. She pondered the challenges the department has faced through the years — from economic downturns to a pandemic and cyber-attack — and described the ways that faculty and staff have always risen to meet each crisis. She rejoiced in the creativity of her team, their successful new initiatives and ongoing opportunities to excel.

Teaching Academy Announces 2022 Frymoyer Scholars Projects & Investigators
Teaching Academy Director Kathryn Huggett, Ph.D., and the Frymoyer Scholars Program Review Committee announced the names and respective investigators for three Larner College of Medicine faculty projects selected to receive 2022 Frymoyer Scholars funding.
Supported by a philanthropic fund – the John W. and Nan P. Frymoyer Fund for Medical Education – the Frymoyer Scholars Program aims to recognize outstanding medical education and promote teaching that emphasizes the art of patient care.
The 2022 funded projects are:
- “Improving newborn resuscitation in the community hospital setting with physician-nurse led distributed practice of simulation and structured debriefing,” led by Jennifer Covino, M.D., an
assistant professor of pediatrics at UVM Health Network—Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital (CVPH) and CVPH collaborators Nathaniel Meuser-Herr, M.D., assistant professor of pediatrics,
Colleen Pennington, BSN, RN, nurse educator, and Disa Seymour, M.S., RNC-MNN, nurse manager.
- “Fostering the Qualities of Excellent Clinical Teachers in Medicine: Interprofessional Collaboration for Feedback, Coaching, and Assessment in Medical Education," led by Emily Greenberger, M.D., assistant
professor of medicine. Collaborators include Jamie Rowell, M.D., chief resident, medicine; Jess VanNostrand, M.D., chief resident,
pediatrics; Karen Dearborn, RN, staff nurse, clinical emergencies response; Katie Dezotelle, RN, nurse educator, pediatrics;
Teah Cardeilhac, RN, nurse educator, pediatrics; and Deirdre O’Reilly, M.D., M.P.H., associate professor of pediatrics.
- “Building an Interdisciplinary Gender Affirming Care Model in the Emergency Department,” led by Katie Wells M.D., M.P.H., assistant professor of emergency medicine. Accolades & Appointments
The Department of Medicine presented the following 2022 faculty awards at a meeting held on June 10:
- The Distinguished Clinician Award, which recognizes the department's most accomplished practicing physicians based on their recognition as an outstanding clinician, reputation as a "physician's physician," and their exceptional
contributions in education, scholarship, administration or community service. Award recipients include Zail S. Berry, M.D., associate professor in the Division of Geriatric Medicine (presented by Michael LaMantia, M. D.);
and Timothy J. Whitman, D.O., associate professor in the Division of Infectious Disease (presented by Devika Singh, M.D.)."
- The Distinguished Mentor Award, which recognizes the often overlooked, but pivotal, role mentors play in future and current careers. Award recipients include Amanda G. Kennedy, Pharm.D., professor in the Division
of Hospital Medicine (presented by Halle Sobel, M.D.).
- The Meritorious Service Award, which recognizes faculty who have demonstrated outstanding service over the past year. Award recipients include W. Kemper Alston, M.D., M.P.H., professor in the Division of Infectious
Disease; and Cindy D. Noyes, M.D., associate professor in the Division of Infectious Disease (presented together by Polly Parsons, M.D.).
- The Quality Scholarship Award, which recognizes faculty who have demonstrated excellence in scholarly quality improvement, patient safety, or high-value care. The award recipient is Melanie R. Bui, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor in the Division of Dermatology (presented by Glenn Goldman, M.D.).
The Department of Medicine recently presented the following awards to residents:
- The Harriet P. Dustan, M.D. Award, which recognizes acquisition of new knowledge through research performed during residency, was presented to Christina He, M.D.
- The Frank L. Babbott, M.D. Memorial Award, which recognizes idealism and integrity, dedication to patient care, commitment to the educational mission of the Department of Medicine, was presented to Jamie Rowell, M.D.
- The Richard E. Bouchard, M.D. Excellence in Primary Care Award, which honors a resident for providing high quality comprehensive care, their dedication as an educator of patients, medical learners and support staff, and demonstrates sincere and genuine concern for patients, was presented to David Steinmetz, M.D.

Class of 2024 medical student Finlay Pilcher has been awarded a 2022 Excellence in Public Health Award from the United States Public Health Service for her New Hampshire and Vermont Schweitzer
Fellowship program project entitled, Improving HPV vaccination rates using a community-based approach in rural Vermont: a pilot initiative.
Pilcher's project, which combined research and public health practice, aimed to increase HPV vaccinations
of students at Lamoille Union High School in Hyde Park, Vt., through improvements to the sexual health education curriculum, hosting an HPV vaccination clinic, and coaching students on how to teach peers about HPV.
