Message from Deans Zehle & Page

March 17, 2020

Dear Larner Community,

As we continue to closely monitor the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and our knowledge about this novel virus develops, our policies and recommendations are rapidly changing. We have been listening to student concerns, following recommendations from the AAMC, monitoring other medical schools and communicating with leadership at our clinical affiliate sites.

As of now, we are suspending all clinical activities for medical students. For students in Advanced Integration, this is currently through April 5, 2020 with a possibility of needing to extend this further. Our students in the Clerkship Year have already had clinical duties suspended at least until April 20, 2020. All students will remain enrolled in their current courses and we ask that they work directly with their course director to determine how to meet the course objectives through remote participation.

Thank you for your patience as we carefully consider the personal safety of our LCOM community, the care of our patients, and the medical training needs of our students. This will pass eventually, but our actions today are critical to the nationwide effort to “flatten the curve and save lives." Please follow the recommendations of the CDC in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19.
With appreciation,

Christa H. Zehle, MD
Sr. Associate Dean for Medical Education
