The Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont and the University of Vermont Health Network have announced that Donald Mathews, M.D., professor of anesthesiology, has been named chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and health care service chief of anesthesiology, effective July 15. Mathews succeeds Mazen Maktabi, M.D., who served in this role since August 2016.

Mathews joined UVM in 2010 as director of the Anesthesiology Residency Program, and recently led the planning process that incorporated Primary Care Internal Medicine into the academic Department of Medicine. He also served as an elected member of the UVM Health Network Medical Group Board of Directors and as a special advisor to the president & CEO of the UVM Health Network Medical Group.

Mathews specializes in total intravenous anesthesia and process EEG monitoring, with a scholarly focus on improving the hypnotic and pain-relieving components of anesthesia. He has authored 28 peer-reviewed papers and more than 30 editorial and opinion papers in his field. In addition, he serves as board advisor of the Scientific Papers Committee of the Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia (SAMBA), where he is a past member of the Board of Directors, and is associate editor for the British Journal of Anaesthesia.

An undergraduate alumnus of Harvard College, Mathews earned his medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed a residency in anesthesiology at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City, followed by a critical care and surgical metabolism research fellowship. Immediately prior to joining UVM, he served as vice chair and residency program director for the Department of Anesthesiology at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York.

“Dr. Mathews is an outstanding clinician, internationally recognized scholar, and dedicated mentor and educational leader and we welcome him to this new role,” said Larner College of Medicine Dean Frederick Morin, M.D., and Claude Deschamps, M.D., president of the UVM Health Network Medical Group.
