Patricia J. O'Brien, an MD and PT in the UVMMC Breast Care Center, has been published in the 2nd Edition of the MASCC Textbook. The chapter, titled "Lymphedema in Cancer Patients" features information regarding cancer treatment as the risk factors for lymphedema, radiation therapy as a risk factor, lifestyle risk reduction, lymphedema treatments, wound care, diagnostic testing, new directions and case studies.
O'Brien has used this chapter as a basis for teaching Oncology fellows, medical students, Physical Therapists and Oncology Rehab staff for years. Anyone planning on doing a rotation with O'Brien receives a copy of the chapter in advance so they will have a better understanding of lymphedema, care, prevention and treatment before they begin their rotation.
O'Brien is proud to say that "our Oncology Lymphedema physical therapy team is now well versed in these topics and teaches at our various public cancer educational events yearly!" She credits Elaine Perry, PT and Lee Nelson, PT as the lead PT public educators.
