More to the Story

The UVM Cancer Center first joined forces with the Lake Monsters in 2023 to raise awareness about skin cancer prevention. Skin cancer is the most prevalent cancer in Vermont and Vermont has the nation’s second highest per-capita rate of new melanoma cases in the nation. The best way to prevent skin cancer is by limiting sun exposure which is why in 2023, the UVM Cancer Center sponsored six sunscreen dispensers around the grandstand at Centennial Field. This summer, the Lake Monsters will continue to offer free SPF 30 through these dispensers as well as mid-inning sun safety education trivia.

Beyond skin cancer, the UVM Cancer Center Community Outreach and Engagement team works to educate community members about all cancer screenings and share prevention tips. Because lavender is the universal color that represents all cancer types the UVM Cancer Center is encouraging fans to wear lavender as a show of support at the June 23rd game.
