Hood Garners American College of Physicians Award

Virginia HoodVirginia Hood, M.B.B.S., M.P.H., professor in the Division of Nephrology, was awarded the Alfred Stengel Memorial Award for Outstanding Service to the American College of Physicians (ACP) at the ACP's 2019 Internal Medicine meeting. Awardees exhibit “unusual loyalty and exceptional contributions to the aims and purposes of the College. They also have “outstanding influence in maintaining and advancing the best standards of medical education, medical practice, and clinical research.” Hood received her M.B.B.S. from the University of Sydney, Australia, and a master’s degree in public health from the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Hood has been a member of the Larner College of Medicine faculty since 1993.



Jensen Appointed to Health Network Leadership Role

Gordon JensenSenior Associate Dean for Research Gordon Jensen, M.D., Ph.D., professor in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, has been appointed by John Brumsted, M.D., CEO of the University of Vermont Health Network, to the newly-created parallel role of University of Vermont Health Network Director of Research. This leadership position was created by the UVM Health Network, the UVM Health Network Medical Group and the Larner College of Medicine to expand opportunities for cutting edge research across all Network partners and bring the latest in innovation and clinical trials to patients and families. Recently named a 2019 Fellow of the American Society for Nutrition, Jensen is also a past president of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition and a past-chair of the Association of Nutrition Programs and Departments.  Read more.

 

Carney to Serve as Associate Dean for Public Health and Health Policy

Jan CarneyIn June of 2019, Jan Carney, M.D., M.P.H., was named Associate Dean for Public Health and Health Policy and Senior Advisor to the Dean. She will also serve as LCME Faculty Accreditation Lead for the College’s 2021 site visit for reaccreditation. A professor in the Division of Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine, Carney has held many leadership roles at the state and national level, including a 13-year tenure as Vermont’s Commissioner of Health. In 2003, Carney received the Vermont Medical Society’s Distinguished Service Award. She was also honored as a Local Legend by the National Institutes of Health’s National Library of Medicine and the American Medical Women’s Association. Read more.

Bridget CarneyBridget Carney, grants specialist with the Vermont Lung Center, received the 2019 UVM Our Common Ground Award, which is presented to staff members who have made extraordinary contributions and who have had a significant impact on UVM. Her award citation states: “Utterly dependable and consistent in her performance, Bridget’s work product is always of the highest quality. Her proactive nature and dedication to customer service result in an office door that is always open and a welcoming presence that makes her visitors feel like their administrative challenge is the only thing on Bridget's plate...Bridget is both essential to UVM’s endeavor to garner research funding and is one of UVM’s most important role models. She is a living embodiment of Our Common Ground core values.” Read more.



Tim Lahey, M.D., MMSc, professor in the Division of Infectious Disease, is the recipient of a 2019 Albert Schweitzer Fellowship Leadership Award. These awards recognize individuals “whose life examples have significantly mitigated the social determinants of health in their communities and whose commitments to service have influenced and inspired others.”

Peter Spector, M.D., professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, recently received recognition in a Medical Design & Outsourcing article, titled “20 medical device startups you need to know,” for CoreMap, a company he founded. CoreMap is currently developing “a diagnostic catheter and EP mapping software” to help clinicians view their patients’ atrial fibrillation at high resolution, in order to better treat it on an individual level.

New National Service and Leadership Roles
  • Michael LaMantia, M.D., M.P.H., associate professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine/Geriatrics and section head for Geriatrics, was elected a fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) on July 1, 2019. The FACP distinction recognizes accomplishments and achievements over and above the practice of medicine, as well as excellence and contributions made to both medicine and to the broader community in which the internist lives and practices.
  • Allen Mead, M.H.S.A., director of the Department of Medicine at UVM and director of Medicine Health Care Service at UVM Medical Center, is the president-elect for AIM (Administrators of Internal Medicine) for 2020. In this role, he will not only serve as a leader for AIM, he will also be a member of the Board of Directors of the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM), an organization with more than 11,000 members in departments of Internal Medicine in the U.S. and Canada.
  • Allen Repp, M.D., FACP, professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine, has been named governor of the Vermont Chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP), the national organization of internists. His term began during the Internal Medicine Meeting 2019, ACP’s annual scientific meeting held in Philadelphia from April 11-13. Within the Vermont Chapter of ACP, Repp has served as a chair of the Membership and Advancement Committee, in addition to serving as a member on both the Chapter Council and the Annual Meeting Planning Committee.
  • Renee Stapleton, M.D., Ph.D., professor in the Division of Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine, has begun her two-year term as chair of American Thoracic Society Critical Care Assembly.

Faculty and Staff News


Shaden Eldakar-Hein and Prema Menon

Shaden Eldakar-Hein, M.D., M.S., associate professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine, and Prema Menon, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor in the Division of Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine, have been named interim assistant deans for students in the Office of Medical Student Education. Eldakar-Hein and Menon will provide oversight of programs that support student professional identity development, academic achievement, health and wellbeing and career advising. They will also engage in institutional leadership initiatives related to the delivery of the medical education program.


Peter Callas, Ph.D., has been appointed associate professor of medicine and director of the Biomedical Statistics Research Core after serving as interim director since July 2018. As director, Callas has oversight of the core’s research faculty and support staff, with a focus on supporting the research activities of faculty and trainees.

Anne Dixon, M.A., B.M., B.Ch., professor and chief of the Division of Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine, and Vikas Anathy, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, recently welcomed postdoctoral fellow Ravishankar Chandresekaran, Ph.D., to their research team. Prior to coming here he was a post-doctoral fellow at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

Jennifer Kelly, D.O., associate professor in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, was the course director and moderator for a continuing medical education program titled “Primary Care Update: Clinical Thyroidology 2019,” held at UVM May 10, 2019. Invited Department of Medicine faculty and their presentations included:

Endocrinology GroupJoel Schnure, M.D., professor and chief for the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism, and Matthew Gilbert, D.O., associate professor and fellowship program director for the same division, attended the 2019 American Diabetes Association annual meeting in San Francisco, Calif. While there, they met with former Larner College of Medicine endocrinology fellow Anders Carlson, M.D., and Annis Marney, M.D., a former associate professor of endocrinology at the College and the former endocrinology fellowship program director.

Clinical News and Notes

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) Education Recognition submitted by Linda Tilton, M.S., R.D., CDE, ADA Education Recognition Coordinator for the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, has been approved, and the program is now recognized by the ADA through August of 2023. The diabetes self-management education program has been continuously recognized by the ADA since 1999 and meets the 2018 National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support.

Kim Dittus, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor in the Division of Hematology/Oncology, provided commentary for the American Heart Association’s first cardio-oncology rehabilitation statement.

Chris Holmes, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor in the Division of Hematology/Oncology, has been named interim deputy director for the UVM Cancer Center.

Grant Highlights

Andrew Hale, M.D., assistant professor in the Division of Infectious Disease, is the recipient of a UVM Department of Medicine Eureka grant for “The Impact of Infectious Diseases Provider Involvement on Asplenic Care Outcomes.”

Christopher Huston, M.D., professor in the Division of Infectious Disease, is principal investigator for a $1.68 million grant from the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for a project titled “Preclinical optimization of a parasiticidal drug for cryptosporidiosis.” The goal is to develop a new drug candidate for treating cryptosporidiosis and determine its molecular mechanism of action, beginning with a piperazine-based lead compound identified through phenotypic screening.

Chi Chi Lau, M.D., associate professor in the Division of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology, has received a Rheumatology Research Foundation Research Preceptorship Award of $4,000 to work with medical student Matthew Dier ‘22.

Devika Singh, M.D., assistant professor in the Division of Infectious Disease, is principal investigator for a $530,000 Ryan White Part C Grant for HIV Care from the federal Health Resources and Services Administration.

Neil Zakai, M.D., associate professor in the Division of Hematology/Oncology, is principal investigator for an R01 grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute for “Thrombosis and Bleeding Risk Assessment in Medical Inpatients.” Mary Cushman, M.D., M.Sc., professor in the Division of Hematology/Oncology, is co-investigator.
