Cushman Study Shows Benefits of Early Anticlotting Therapy in Moderate COVID-19
Mary Cushman

Results from an international grassroots-funded multi-center clinical trial co-led by Mary Cushman, M.D., M.Sc., professor in the Division of Hematology/Oncology, show that giving a full dose of heparin early to moderately ill hospitalized COVID-19 patients could reduce the risk of severe disease and death. The RAPID Trial was designed to detect differences in the primary outcomes of moderately ill hospitalized COVID-19 patients, such as ICU admission, mechanical ventilation, or death. Participants were randomized to receive either a therapeutic full dose or prophylactic low dose of heparin – a blood thinner given regularly at low dose to hospitalized patients to stop clots from forming and reduce inflammation. Co-PIs with Cushman are Michelle Sholzberg, M.D.C.M., M.Sc., and Peter Jüni, M.D., of St. Michael’s Hospital of Unity Health Toronto and the University of Toronto. Read more.

Ninth Biennial Stem Cell Conference a Success
Daniel WeissUVM hosted the 9th biennial Stem Cells, Cell Therapies, and Bioengineering in Lung Biology and Diseases Conference July 12-15. Traditionally held at UVM since 2005, this year’s virtual conference had nearly 200 participants, the highest number ever, and remains the leading conference in these rapidly evolving areas. Daniel Weiss, M.D., Ph.D., professor in the Division of Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine, is emeritus conference chair. He co-developed the first conference and served as co-chair of several past conferences. This year's event had attendance from researchers from five continents and 13 countries. Participants, which include both top researchers and trainees, discuss recent study findings, explore opportunities for new collaborations, and identify the most important needs and priorities for future programs. Pierce Plays Key Role in Vaccine Education for New American Communities

Kristen PierceKristen Pierce, M.D., professor in the Division of Infectious Disease, has been playing a lead role in COVID-19 vaccination outreach to New American communities in Vermont. In collaboration with VT LEND and community leaders from several location organizations including UVM Health Network’s Government and Community Relations Office, U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants-Vermont and Association of Africans Living in Vermont, she has been hosting virtual education sessions since the vaccine became available. The goal is to share the reasons why it’s important to get the vaccine and answer questions to encourage community members to get vaccinated. There were a total of 17 COVID-19 vaccine education sessions delivered via Zoom between December 2020 and March 2021 to the following communities/languages: Nepalese-Bhutanese; Congolese (three separate sessions – one each for Swahili, French, and Lingala languages); Somali (three separate sessions – one each for Somali, Maay Maay, and Kirundi languages); Arabic-speaking; Nepalese elders; Karen Burmese; and Vietnamese. Vaccine information flyers translated into all these languages have been distributed to communities.
