Attendance: Foundations Level

Policy 510.10

Policy Statement

Students are responsible for regular attendance and participation, for completion of assignments, and for thorough preparation for examinations. Students are expected to arrive for learning activities fully prepared to learn (preparative work complete, bringing appropriate learning materials and technology, etc.).

All students must participate in activities in which they are expected to contribute to the learning of others.  Activity involving direct patient care, including standardized patients, are mandatory.

Learning activities in Foundations include lectures, small and large group active learning exercises, laboratories, small group sessions, clinical rotations, simulation, experiential learning, formative assessments, homework and other activities as assigned. Each course syllabus will list additional learning activities that are mandatory.

In the event of extenuating circumstances, such as personal events (participation in a wedding, funerals), personal illness, or serious illness in the family, students should contact the course director to request an excused absence. Approval for an excused absence may also be given when there are conflicts with a major holiday for the religion that the student practices.

Students presenting academic work at national meetings are ordinarily allowed two days away from course activities (a travel day and the day of the presentation), with the appropriate permission from the course director who can seek direction from the Associate/Assistant Dean for Students, if needed.

Students are responsible for contacting the course director to learn what make-up assignments must be completed for all the work missed. Failure to complete the work will result in an incomplete grade.
