Now Accepting Applications for the 2023-2024 Academic Year

Funds for Educational and Scholarly Opportunities

The University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine Funds for Educational and Scholarly Opportunities program was established to support students who would like to travel to conferences, alternative learning opportunities or similar events. Grants are funded through donations to the Larner College of Medicine.

Applications must be submitted at least 2 months ahead of the proposed travel. Applications that meet certain criteria will be reviewed and approved by the FESO committee on a quarterly basis. To be reviewed by the committee, applications must be submitted by the first day of the quarter (July 1, October 1, January 1, and April 1.) The committee will meet and determine funding within several weeks from this deadline. The deadline for submitting FESO applications in time for the next FESO Committee Review is April 1st, 2024.

Applications for conferences or scholarly opportunities with a more urgent timeline (e.g., late acceptance to present at an upcoming conference) will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

To be eligible for review outside of the standard quarterly timeline:

  • Applications must be submitted within two weeks of notification of abstract acceptance to the conference.
  • The conference must be taking place prior to the subsequent quarterly review meeting.

Awards on this more urgent, off-cycle timeline will be subject to availability of funds in that quarter.

The award will not exceed $750 and students will only be awarded FESO funding once throughout their medical education at the Larner College of Medicine.

Please do not apply more than nine months ahead of your travel date. Program guidelines can be reviewed here. Applicants can submit their FESO application or questions electronically to Student COM Services . Please include "FESO" in the subject line of your email to ensure it gets directed to the Committee Administrator.

International Travel During Your Medical Education

Traveling abroad during your medical education is an exciting and rewarding experience. Our students have the opportunity to travel abroad at various points in the curriculum, especially during the summer between their first and second year or during the Advanced Integration portion of the curriculum. The Larner College of Medicine Scholarly Grant Program can help make these experiences possible.

If you are considering traveling abroad, please review our Medical Student Handbook Policy 920.00 - International Travel for information regarding student travel overseas.
