2020 IAMSE Virtual Conference: June 15-18

Registration is now open! At this annual meeting of the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE) you will be able to connect with and learn from others who share the same passion for the improvement of teaching and learning medical and basic sciences. The annual IAMSE conference will provide you with new teaching techniques, ideas and resources. It is also one of the best professional development activities for networking with other professionals.

Registration is FREE!
By registering for the free virtual conference you will gain access to each of the accepted poster and oral presentations, plenary addresses, award presentations and more! You can find a full schedule of events here. Some events, like the poster and oral presentations, will be presented on demand and will be available for 60 days after the meeting. Please note that you will need to register and be signed in to view any conference events or presentations.

The Generalists in Medical Education (TGME) 

This annual conference will be held on November 11-13, 2020 Online! This year’s conference theme is:Medical Education in 2020: What’s Working, What’s Next, and What’s Needed 

You are invited to submit a proposal for this year’s conference.  It will provide a forum to share your educational research and educational innovations. The Generalists in Medical Education offer a variety of proposal and presentation formats: a) Round Table Discussions, b) Descriptive Sessions, c) Panel Discussions, d) Problem-Solving Sessions, e) Skill Acquisition Sessions, f) Ignite Presentations.  Descriptions of each type of proposal format can be found on the website. Please submit proposals via the TGME website https://thegeneralists.org/ Proposals must be submitted electronically, no later than 11:59 pm EST on July 15, 2020.

Teaching Academy Member News

Shaden Eldakar-Hein, M.D., M.S., interim assistant dean for students and associate professor of medicine, received the AOA Society Faculty Award at the Class of 2020 Honors Celebration. Dr. Eldakar-Hein was recognized for exemplifying the key AOA Society values and attributes, including scholarship, professionalism, leadership, and service and was inducted into the AOA Honor Medical Society.

Garth Garrison, M.D., associate professor of medicine and director of the pulmonary and critical care fellowship program, received the Clinical Teacher of the Year Award at the Class of 2020 Honors Celebration. The award recognizes his commitment to the central tenants of professionalism, his active role in teaching at every level of the curriculum, and his creation of a clinical skills exam that prepares the members of the class to be physicians.

Teaching Academy Master Teacher, Kristen K. DeStigter, MD, received the 2020 APDR Achievement Award from the Association of University Radiologists (AUR).

  • Green Discusses Nuances of Telehealth in VTDigger Article
    May 17, 2020 by Lila Sullivan
    (MAY 17, 2020) Andrea Green, M.D., professor of pediatrics, was featured in a VTDigger article, titled "The doctor is online: Telehealth may become big part of new normal." Green discussed how patients and families in the New American clinic she directs are adjusting to telehealth, as well as newfound advantages to the use of this technology.

Year I Came to UVM: 2019

Best Teaching Moment: One day, I showed a death curve to the class, asking the students what they have found from the figure.  One student answered solemnly, “We are all going to die.”  The whole class laughed.  Two professors happened to audit the class that day.  “I almost fell off the chair at that moment,” one of them told me later, “ I really admire the humor your student has.”  I believe, “They learn when you make them laugh.”  I like it, especially when students let it happen.
