Vermont License Requirements

The Vermont Board of Medical Practice’s CMIE rules for re-licensure include a general requirement for 30 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM during each licensure cycle. This includes a minimum of one credit for hospice, palliative care, pain management, as well as a minimum of two credits for prescribing controlled substances (required only for licensees who have or have applied for DEA registration).

The current two-year cycle runs from December 1, 2022 through November 30, 2024.

Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act 

The MATE took effect in June 2023. This act requires new or renewing DEA licensees to have completed a total of at least eight hours of training on opioid or other substance use disorders and the appropriate treatment of pain.

- This session highlights the practical aspects of managing patients prescribed opioids in primary care.  This session includes reviewing the rules for both prescribing and querying the Vermont Prescription Monitoring System (VPMS).  This session also includes information about how to safely initiate and discontinue opioids in primary care.

    • Management of Fibromyalgia

- This topic includes reviewing the diagnosis of fibromyalgia, evaluating the evidence for non-pharmacologic management options, and discussing the pharmacologic approaches to management.


    Scope of Pain

    Scope of Pain is a series of continuing medical education/continuing nursing education activities designed to help you safely and effectively manage patients with acute and/or chronic pain, when appropriate, with opioid analgesics. (This program is offered through the Boston University School of Medicine.
