Acute respiratory disease (ARD) due to infection with adenovirus is a major cause of morbidity at military training centers. In addition to ARD, adenovirus infection can cause sore throat, pneumonia, conjunctivitis, and urinary infections.

Larner College of Medicine student research projects were among a record 440 projects showcased at the University of Vermont’s 2017 Student Research Conference on April 27, 2017 in the Davis Center’s Grand Maple Ballroom. The event – the largest in its 11-year history – was a display of student passion for research and poise in presentation.

Cells grown in a petri dish behave differently than cells that reside in a human being or animal. In order to help bridge the divide between these two worlds and gain a better understanding of what causes disease, Patrick Mullen works in both, comparing results he sees in the lab of Christopher Francklyn, Ph.D., an expert in protein synthesis enzymes, with animal studies conducted in the lab of Alicia Ebert, Ph.D., a biology professor known for her work with zebrafish.

The event honored the late Dr. Larner and his wife Helen for their generosity and longtime dedication to and support of medicine, education and UVM over the past 32 years.

Robert Larner, M.D., the Burlington native for whom the UVM Larner College of Medicine was named in September of 2016, died peacefully at his home in Woodland Hills, Calif. on Thursday, April 20, 2017. He was 99 years old.
