Frederick Morin, M.D., dean of the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont, and Claude Deschamps, M.D., president of the University of Vermont Health Network – Medical Group, have announced the appointment of Kristen DeStigter, M.D., FACR, as chair of the Department of Radiology at the UVM Larner College of Medicine and Health Care Service Chief of Radiology at the UVM Medical Center, effective immediately.

The John P. and Kathryn H. Tampas Green and Gold Professor of Radiology at the UVM Larner College of Medicine, DeStigter has served as interim chair of radiology since 2014 and was selected following a national search. She holds a medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and completed a residency in diagnostic radiology and a body imaging fellowship at University Hospitals of Cleveland, Ohio prior to joining the UVM faculty in 2001. In 2004, Destigter was named vice chair of radiology and in 2013, she was promoted to full professor. Inducted as a fellow in the American College of Radiology (ACR) in 2013, she has served as president of the Vermont Chapter of the ACR, and serves on the ACR International Outreach Committee. She is also chair of the Committee of International Radiology Education of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

DeStigter is co-founder and president of Imaging the World, a nonprofit organization that developed and uses a new sustainable model for ultrasound imaging, making basic life-saving diagnosis accessible in the poorest regions of the world. In 2016, she received two honors for her work in this area: the ACR Foundation Global Humanitarian Award and the RSNA Outstanding Educator Award. DeStigter’s scholarly work focuses on unique applications of ultrasonography in rural medicine, provision of integrated medical imaging in underserved communities, and medical education in diagnostic radiology.
