Mission Statement
To identify, select and recruit a diverse group of academically accomplished students whose attributes and experiences indicate that they will be kind, compassionate physicians, educators and/or scientific investigators dedicated to improving the
health of individuals and communities locally and worldwide.
To accomplish our mission, the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine (UVMLCOM) admissions procedures ensure that the admissions committee is composed of a diverse and broadly representative cohort of faculty, students, and community members.
Each candidate’s file is reviewed using a holistic approach to evaluate applicant attributes in the broader context of their life experiences. These attributes include academic excellence; personal characteristics such as intellectual curiosity,
oral communication, ethical responsibility, capacity for improvement, reliability, adaptability, cultural humility, leadership, teamwork, service to others; accomplishments in research; and contribution to diversity (gender, race, ethnicity, sexual
orientation, socio‐economic background, mental and physical abilities, geographic origin). The committee places special emphasis on understanding how each individual applicant’s unique life experience has contributed to the pursuit of their
goal of entering the field of medicine. Our process is guided by our values of professionalism, which include integrity, cultural humility, social responsibility, altruism, compassion, accountability, kindness and respect.
