Fall 2017 Community Medical School Series Kicks Off Sept. 5

Since 1998, this program, jointly organized by the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont and the UVM Medical Center, has been providing members of the UVM and local community with accessible and important education on a wide variety of timely, fascinating, and engaging health care topics.

Every year, the end of August spurs anticipatory excitement in past and potential Community Medical School attendees.

Since 1998, this program, jointly organized by the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont and the UVM Medical Center, has been providing members of the UVM and local community with accessible and important education on a wide variety of timely, fascinating, and engaging health care topics.

Series Kick-Off: Tuesday, September 5

On Tuesday, September 5, Community Medical School entered its 19th year with the kick-off of its Fall 2017 Series. UVM Associate Professor of Radiology Sally Herschorn, M.D., discussed breast density, the technology available to women with dense breasts, and advocacy work to pass laws to notify women with dense breasts about their additional risk for breast cancer.

Community Medical School lectures are hosted on the first Tuesday of every month through November 7 and are free and open to the public. The events are held in Carpenter Auditorium in the Given Building at the UVM College of Medicine and include an open Q&A Session.

In addition to Dr. Herschorn's talk, you can look forward to additional  topics and speakers including:

  • October 3: A SPECIAL PANEL PRESENTATION - "Lyme Disease: Big Bad Borrelia burgdorferi & the Tiny Tick" featuring Ralph C. Budd, M.D., University Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Director, Vermont Center for Immunology & Infectious Diseases; Bradley Tompkins, M.P.H, Infectious Disease Epidemiologist and Program Chief, Vermont Department of Health; Molly Markowitz, Student, Larner College of Medicine Class of 2018. 
  • November 7: "Politics, Money, & Science: Current Debates in Public Health & Health Policy" presented by Jan K. Carney, M.D., M.P.H., UVM Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean for Public Health.
