Message from the Division Chief

Cardiovascular Services seeks to provide comprehensive cardiovascular care in our region through an integrated network.  This robust clinical enterprise, with more than 36,000 ambulatory visits and over 2,000 hospitalized patients each year, supports a dynamic cardiovascular research and education program.

Our faculty are highly valued, and regularly honored, for their teaching. In 2013, Dr. William Hopkins was honored for the seventh consecutive year by the medical students as Course Director of the Year, and the first-year course he directs, Cardiovascular, Respiratory, and Renal, was awarded Best Course also for the seventh consecutive year.

Across the division, faculty engage in translational, clinical, and mechanical research studies that lead to more than 50 published manuscripts and chapters annually. Research highlights that directly impact patient care include the following:

  • Cardiovascular intervention: Dr. Dauerman is an active investigator in trials testing the CoreValve transcatheter aortic valve as well as trials testing new generation coronary stents, including bioabsorbable stents.
  • Electrophysiology: Dr. Lustgarten was an investigator in a trial testing a catheter-delivered device that occludes the left atrial appendage to prevent emboli in patients with atrial fibrillation.  Dr. Spector has developed a new method to enhance our understanding of atrial fibrillation through advanced mapping--this system should improve our ability to perform ablation effectively.
  • Heart failure research: Patients with heart failure are offered participation in studies sponsored by the NHLBI Heart Failure Clinical Research Network.
