Message from the Division Chief
The solutions to today's health problems require looking beyond the traditional boundaries of the biologic sciences. Drawing on the successes of Public Health, Epidemiology, Computer Science, Health Services Research, Engineering, the Social Sciences, and Evidence-Based Medicine, faculty in GIMR develop new approaches to improving health and health care, deploy them in the bustling real world environment of real patients and real clinicians, test them rigorously, and spread the message of what works and why.
Our faculty come from Primary Care Internal Medicine as well as other health care professions and the sciences. We apply the principles of rigorous hard science to externally-funded research and teaching to undergraduate, graduate, professional and continuing audiences.
Our research spans the range of clinical and translational science from the bench to the bedside and beyond to the community. We evaluate the impact of medications on the incidence of disease, technology on the incidence of prescribing errors, compassion and computers on the quality of care, the built environment on the content of health care services, and organizational strategies on the costs and outcomes of disease. Although our roots are in primary care, we recognize that health problems don't specialize - we work in any domain with the opportunity to move the needle by making things better. We care about the unique problems of life in rural areas.
We teach extensively. GIMR is the home of the graduate programs and post-residency training in Clinical and Translational Science, the Program in Wise Prescribing for community physicians. We provide key faculty to undergraduate and graduate educational programs in Surgery, Nursing and Health Professions, Computer Science, the Vermont Integrated Curriculum for medical students, and residency education in Internal Medicine and Psychiatry.

Many of our faculty provide clinical teaching and patient care through our Primary Care Internal Medicine division partner.
Locations & Facilities
Our academic offices are located in the LEED certified atrium Courtyard at Given on the University of Vermont campus which is adjacent to our teaching partner, The University of Vermont Medical Center. From inside the Given building, go to the Courtyard stairwell outside the cafeteria, proceed to the 4th floor and turn right. Our Burlington home is nestled between the shores of Lake Champlain and the vistas of the Green Mountains.
