King Co-Authors JAMA Viewpoint on Physician Sexual Misconduct
Patricia KingPatricia King, M.D., Ph.D., professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine, co-authored a Viewpoint published in JAMA on March 29, 2021, titled “State Medical Board Recommendations for Stronger Approaches to Sexual Misconduct by Physicians.” The piece is a result of two years of work by a Federation of State Medical Boards national workgroup on physician sexual misconduct that King chaired. The workgroup report was accepted by the state medical boards’ House of Delegates about a year ago and has resulted in changes in laws and state medical board approaches across the country. “We hope that the report’s recommendations will promote changes that support public protection and public trust in the medical profession,” says King. Kaminsky and Menson Create COVID-19 Recovery Program

David Kaminsky, Katherine MensonMembers of the Department of Medicine, including David Kaminsky, M.D., and Katherine Menson, D.O. (at left), have come together to create a program specifically for patients known as “COVID long haulers,” a group that experiences a constellation of disparate symptoms weeks or even months after initial infection. Kaminsky, a professor in the Division of Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine, says a support group the department created for all UVM Health Network patients diagnosed with COVID-19 helped to identify the need for services specifically for COVID long haulers. He reached out to colleagues in various divisions, including rheumatology and infectious disease, as well as members of the Department of Family Medicine, to move forward with what is now known as the COVID Recovery Program. Harold Dauerman, M.D., professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, has joined the International Executive Committee for the new TAVR EXPAND trial: An International Randomized Trial of TAVR Versus Medical Therapy in Patients with Moderate Aortic Stenosis and Heart Failure (Sponsor: Medtronic).

A team of cardiologists and cardiology fellows are exploring a possible new approach to treating patients with heart failure and preserved heart function, a problem that is responsible for half of all heart failure hospitalizations, and for which there are no FDA-approved therapies. Cardiology fellows Nicole Habel, M.D., and Maggie Infeld, M.D., are working with their mentors, Daniel Lustgarten, M.D. Ph.D., professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, and Markus Meyers, M.D., who recently moved to University of Minnesota, Lillehei Heart Institute, on a new trial, called PACE-HFpEF.
