Education

The Department offers a unique integrated child and adolescent residency training program emphasizing family-based pediatric psychiatry and research. A culture of curiosity and learning is evident in all our academic activities, from core medical student rotations to departmental conferences to resident seminars. The Department trains all levels of professionals from graduate students and postdoctoral students in research to medicals students, nursing students, psychology students, residents, and fellows.  We offer unique integrated child and adolescent psychiatry training program emphasizing family-based approaches to treating youth.  A culture of curiosity and learning is evident in all of our academic activities and across all of our UVM Health Network training sites.  We have a global health emphasis through our collaborations in Uganda.

Research

The Department has four main research areas: substance use, child psychiatry, public psychiatry, and neuroscience, all supported by numerous NIH grants. Our substance use research focuses on the behavioral and biological basis of dependence and the treatment of demographically-unique populations. We are a core site of the ABCD study, a 10-year longitudinal student of substance use in children.
