Congratulations!

Deborah L. Cook, MD, Teaching Academy Expert Teacher and Professor received the inaugural awarding of the Allison and Matthew S. Dinehart Green and Gold Professorship in Dermatopathology at the University of Vermont.  An endowed professorship is one of the highest honors the University can bestow upon a faculty member and the selection for this professorship is a testament to Dr. Cook’s enduring commitment to the teaching of our trainees, mentoring at all levels, and her dedication to the clinical service of Dermatopathology.  She is the founding Director of the Dermatopathology Service at UVMMC, created in 1997, and the Dermatopathology Fellowship Program (ACGME accredited) in 2005.

The department of Medicine recently gave out departmental awards. The Quality Scholarship Award, recognizing individuals or teams who have demonstrated excellence in scholarly quality improvement, patient safety, and/or high-value care: Chris Holmes, MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine and Deputy Division Chief of Hematology/Oncology; and Elly Riser, MD, MPH, Teaching Academy Member and Assistant Professor of Medicine. The Distinguished Educator Award (new for 2024), recognizing exceptional medical student, graduate student, trainee, and peer educators: Dennis Beatty, MD,  Teaching Academy Expert Teacher and Associate Professor of Medicine.

Teaching Academy Member and Assistant Professor of Medicine Sherrie Khadanga, MD, has been awarded her first R01 grant, from the National Institute on Aging for “Optimizing Aerobic Fitness and Functional Response to Exercise in Older Adults.” The project aims to combine high-intensity interval training and high-intensity resistance training to improve peak oxygen uptake and physical function in older patients needing cardiac rehabilitation.

Teaching Academy Member and Endocrinologist Jennifer Kelly, DO, professor of medicine, was recently appointed as the new chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at the University of Vermont Health Network. Nationally known for her work in bone health and recognized as an exceptional continuous medical education educator, Kelly had served as interim division chief since 2022. 

 

NBME Grant Program Updates and Announcements

Emerging Innovators Grants: This program supports early to mid-career faculty with assessment research. The theme for the 2024 cycle is Promoting Equitable Assessment in Medical Education. Updated Deadline: Applications for the 2024 cycle are currently being accepted through Wednesday, August 21, 2024. 

Hubbard Award: To recognize and celebrate individuals who have made outstanding and sustainable contributions to the field of assessment in medical education, NBME is now accepting letters of nomination for the 2025 Hubbard Award.  Deadline: Letters of nomination are due by Friday, Sept. 27, 2024.

This one-day intensive course is designed to introduce participants to the pedagogy, strategies, and resources for effective teaching and assessment. This event is open to all UVM Larner College of Medicine faculty at all teaching sites in the University of Vermont Health Network. This course is designed especially for faculty, residents, fellows, graduate students, and postdocs who are new to teaching.
