(NOVEMBER 27, 2020) Jan Carney, M.D., M.P.H., associate dean for public health and health policy and professor of medicine, was quoted in a Boston Globe article, titled "Vermont has now been hard hit by the coronavirus. What happened?"

The Vermont Academy of Science and Engineering formally inducted Larner College of Medicine Dean and Professor of Medicine Richard L. Page, M.D., Professor of Pharmacology Frances Carr, Ph.D., and Professor of Biochemistry Christopher Francklyn, Ph.D., at the Academy's annual meeting on October 26, 2020.

University of Vermont Professor of Medicine Daniel Weiss, M.D., Ph.D., has been selected to receive one of the inaugural American Lung Association COVID-19 Action Initiative's COVID-19 and Respiratory Virus Research Award.

(NOVEMBER 6, 2020) James Hudziak, M.D., Director of the Vermont Center for Children, Youth and Families, creator and director of the UVM Wellness Environment (WE), and professor of psychiatry, was quoted in a National Geographic article, titled "Why Music Might be the Perfect Tool to Decrease Kids' Pandemic Stress."

Organized by Black physicians and scientists in the United States and abroad, the #BlackInCardio movement celebrates Black researchers, clinicians, and professionals in cardiovascular fields and raises awareness of cardiovascular diseases that disproportionately effect the Black community. From October 19 - October 25, the new organization will host its first annual #BlackInCardio week.

New research, published by scientists at the University of Vermont and Caltech in the journal Cell, has pinpointed three specific mechanisms that allow SARS-CoV-2 to incapacitate human cells by disabling the cell’s alarm system to call for help or warn nearby cells of infection.

A team of scientists at the University of Vermont, working in partnership with a group at the University of Washington, has developed a method of testing for the COVID-19 virus that doesn’t make use of these chemicals but still delivers an accurate result, paving the way for inexpensive, widely available testing in both developing countries and industrialized nations like the United States, where reagent supplies are again in short supply.

A new $5.47 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine will support the creation of the UVM Center for Biomedical Shared Resources. The grant will fund completion of the Center's home on the first floor of the new Firestone Medical Research Building, which will be located on the south end of the Larner College of Medicine complex.

Timothy Plante ’06 M.D.’10, M.H.S., assistant professor of medicine, has been appointed the Martin E. Bloomfield ’56 M.D.’60 and Judith S. Bloomfield ’59 Early Career Professor in Cardiovascular Research at the University of Vermont’s Larner College of Medicine.

The University of Vermont (UVM) is participating in a major national research effort to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of varying types of blood thinners to treat adults diagnosed and hospitalized with COVID-19—the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2.

(AUGUST 7, 2020) Mary Cushman, M.D., M.Sc., professor of medicine, was quoted in an MSN article, titled "Even if You Exercise Regularly, this One Habit Could Undo All Your Hard Work," about the importance of not only exercise, but also how active you are on a daily basis, to prevent blood clots and other clotting disorders.

(AUGUST 7, 2020) Timothy Lahey, M.D., M.M.Sc., professor of medicine, was quoted in an NBC5 story about a local woman who has been donating plasma, post a COVID-19 diagnosis.

The University of Vermont received $181.7 million in research funding during the 2020 fiscal year - the largest in UVM history by a wide margin. The Larner College of Medicine had the largest number of grants.

(JULY 15, 2020) Bonita Libman, M.D., professor of medicine and fellowship program director for the Division of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology, is quoted in a July 15 article in The Rheumatologist, titled "COVID-19 Poses Training Challenges for Rheumatology Fellows."

Professor of Medicine Mary Cushman, M.D., M.Sc., has been named the recipient of the American Heart Association's 2020 Award of Meritorious Achievement. She will be honored with the award, which recognizes individuals who have rendered an important service to the AHA, during the association's live stream event in October.

(JULY 10 & 14, 2020) A study preprint published on the Social Science Research Network and coauthored by Assistant Professor of Radiology Eline van den Broek-Altenburg, Ph.D., and Professor of Medicine Adam Atherly, Ph.D., was mentioned in a Wall St. Journal and Daily Kos article.

(JULY 9, 2020) A joint statement regarding venous thromboembolism research priorities issued by the International Society for Thrombosis and Haemostasis and American Heart Association was picked up by several online media outlets and includes quoted from Mary Cushman, M.D., M.Sc., professor of medicine and statement chair.

A new, three-year $500,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation will allow members of the UVM Center for Health Services Research (CHSR) at the Larner College of Medicine, led by center director and Professor of Medicine Adam Atherly, Ph.D., to explore the effectiveness of community health teams in improving the quality and efficiency of health care delivery.
