Instructional Tools and LCOM Systems Toolkit

The LCOM Technology Services team has put together this technology toolkit to provide you with an overview of our instructional and work tools with descriptions of how and why they are used. We encourage you to contact us with questions, concerns or your support needs using the methods outlined below.

The COMTS Helpdesk: The helpdesk hours are 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. Please enter a support ticket request (Footprint) for assistance. Phone support is also available at 802-488-5553.

The COMAV Team  The COMAV team manages our Zoom videoconferencing resources and can assist you with meetings when needed. You can reach them by mailing comav@med.uvm.edu or by submitting support ticket request ( Footprint).

Tool: Remote Desktop / LCOM Gateway

What is it? A virtual Windows computer
What does it do? By accessing the remote gateway you are mimicking the experience of using your office computer on campus.
Recommended use: Accessing department and personal work files stored on the L and H drive while working remotely.
How is it used in the curriculum? Faculty access files stored on L and H drives. This also permits access to an LCOM virtual computer from a computer that may not be your own (from the hospital, home, etc.)
How is it used in the research community? L: drive locations are a common spot to store lab documents, SOPs, data and grant information.
How do you access this tool? Using a web browser (we do NOT recommend Internet Explorer), visit https://gateway.med.uvm.edu and use your LCOM username and password.

Tool: Microsoft OneDrive

What is it? OneDrive is a cloud-based file storage tool, much like Google Drive or DropBox.
What does it do? Files stored in OneDrive can be accessed via the web on any computer by visiting https://portal.office.com, authenticating with your LCOM username and password, and selecting the OneDrive application. OneDrive can also be installed on your work and personal computer(s) and Apple and Android devices.
Recommended use: Storage of files for remote access on one or more devices. It also facilitates collaboration by facilitating sharing and collaboration via link. Collaboration is permitted between LCOM, UVM Main campus and UVM Health domains.
How is it used in the curriculum? Used by faculty and staff to store and share files.
How is it used in the research community? This location is connected to your individual account much like the H: drive is but does not require the VPN connection or the Remote Desktop connection. It is a cloud storage location available with an internet connection. Please keep in mind that you must continue to follow DUAs, IRB approved protocol agreements, contractual obligations and compliance/regulation requirements. How do you access this tool? This can be installed as an application on your computer or mobile device and is also accessible via web browser at https://portal.office.com, select OneDrive. It is pre-installed on LCOM-issued computers.

Tool: Zoom

What is it? A video conferencing tool, now available to all users with a LCOM account.
What does it do? Provides video conferencing for meetings of 2 to 300 or more. Also features screen sharing, whiteboard capabilities, breakout rooms and meeting recording.
Recommended use: Online meeting with peers, synchronous curriculum delivery, recording curriculum narration videos. LCOM COMTS is also using this tool to offer technology support.
How is it used in the curriculum? Online support, asynchronous (recorded video) and synchronous teaching.
How is it used in the research community? Much like with administrative use, this tool can allow for virtual lab meetings and ad hoc conversations with colleagues near and far.

Tool: Microsoft Teams

What is it? Teams is collaboration software.
What does it do? Teams provides instant messaging, video and audio conferencing, access to cloud storage and an online version of the Office 365 suite of apps. Groups of people are organized as a group or Team. To request a Team collaboration space, submit a Footprint support ticket.
Recommended use: Collaboration in smaller group entities to facilitate quick, agile communication around specific projects or tasks.
How is it used in the curriculum? Teams is primarily used by those who create and deliver the LCOM curriculum to facilitate collaboration. It has not been integrated into direct teaching.
How is it used in the research community? This a great collaboration space most easily used with others at our institution. Groups can be created based on PI, research projects, or other logical groupings. You will need to submit a footprints ticket to request a team creation. Please keep in mind that you must continue to follow DUAs, IRB approved protocol agreements, contractual obligations and compliance/regulation requirements. How do you access this tool? Teams is part of the O365 suite. You can access this via an app on your computer or mobile device or via a web browser at https://portal.office.com/, select Teams.

Tool: Camtasia

What is it? Camtasia is screen recording and video editing software.
What does it do? Camtasia allows for the recording of any activity on your computer screen, with narration. It allows for video editing and annotation of the screen recording as well as a host of other features.
Recommended use: Recording curricular presentations and tutorials.
How is it used in the curriculum? Faculty and staff record narrated videos for use as independent learning and asynchronous learning materials,
How is it used in the research community? This could be used to record and edit instructions, processes or other tutorials.
How do you access this tool? LCOM provides a license for faculty and staff. Contact LCOM COMTS (link below) for assistance with installation and licensing. You will be directed to an online download and provided a license key.

Tool: Turning Point

What is it? Software to offer polling questions with students remotely. Available to all users with a LCOM account.
Recommended use: Online meetings with medical students.
How is it used in the curriculum? Polling questions during synchronous teaching.
How is it used in the research community? This could be used to record and edit instructions, processes or other tutorials.
How do you access this tool? Download the software below or contact the EdTech department at edtech@med.uvm.edu, or call the COMTS service center at 802-488-5553. Students do not need the software. Faculty only need the software if they will be presenting from a classroom computer, they do not ned the software.

Tool: UVM Main Campus Gateway

What is it? A portal for HR, administration, PeopleSoft, undergraduate curriculum and main campus (uvm.edu) email.
How do you access this tool? https://myuvm.uvm.edu and use your UVM main campus (uvm.edu) username and password.

Tool: UVMMC Gateway

What is it? An online portal for UVMMC administration and patient care assets
How do you access this tool? https://workspace.uvmhealth.org Connect with your UVMMC username and password.

Tool: Virtual Private Network (VPN)

What is it? A virtual network connection
What does it do? By accessing the VPN, you mimic the experience of connecting your computer to the campus network.
Recommended use:
Accessing sensitive data and secured resources. This is not recommended for continuous use. Please review the remote Desktop/LCOM gateway options.
How is it used in the curriculum? This is not typically used in the curriculum.
How is it used in the research community? Certain data sets are stored on secured network resources; using the VPN you can access these resources.
