(OCTOBER 31, 2024) Larner social scientist Matt Dugan, M.A., an evidence-based communication lecturer in UVM’s Department of Community Development and Applied Economics, was quoted in a Manchester (Vt.) Journal article about AI-generated text.

According to the Pew Research Center, 55 percent of Americans used AI tools daily in December 2022, and this number continues to rise. Usually, it is not difficult to identify AI-generated text, but with newer models being produced constantly, some think there might be a time when it is undetectable from human writing.

Others think that this powerful tool might not be as capable as humans. Dugan believes AI will improve, but he doubts it will replace people. “People are the only ones that I can ever conceive of who are capable of digging up those original ideas and then trying to express them to others.”
