Visiting Medical Student Elective in EM

Didactics

Students will participate in over 20 hours of didactic sessions during the rotation, including dedicated student sessions to prepare you for EM residency. Our EM Residency didactics every Thursday afternoon include Grand Rounds, Case-discussions, QA, and EKG/US rounds. Students will also participate in Foundations cases and Simulation cases with our EM residents.

Evaluation

Students will be evaluated based on clinical performance, participation in didactics, and specific feedback from attending faculty regarding attitude and approach to learning. The exam at the end of the clerkship will also be factored into the student’s final grade. A Standardized Letter of Evaluation (SLOE) will be completed by our SLOE Committee for all those students applying to EM. Grades for purposes of the SLOE will be Honors, High Pass, Pass, and Fail. Grades for transcript purposes will be reported based in each student's own institution grading scale.

Prerequisites

  • 4th year medical students who are in good academic standing at a U.S. LCME accredited allopathic institution (are enrolled in medical degree-granting programs) or students who are in good standing at a U.S. COCA accredited osteopathic institution (are enrolled in a DO-granting program).
  • Letter of interest: Interested students should submit a one-page letter of interest describing (1) why Emergency Medicine as a career choice, and (2) why University of Vermont Medical Center for a visiting elective.

Information for visiting students. 

 

Our Visiting Student Elective is a 4-week rotation, offered June - December each year, designed for 4th year medical students who intend to pursue a career in EM.


Students work primarily UVMMC ED in Burlington, Vermont. This is the primary site for the EM Residency, and sees approximately 70,000 (adult and pediatric) patients per year. During the elective, students will work approximately 14 clinical shifts (distributed over days, evenings and overnights, including 2 weekends) and participate in our weekly didactics. For each clinical shift, students will be paired with one of our senior EM residents or dynamic faculty members who come from a broad range of backgrounds and have unique academic interests.
