Critical Care Medicine

Welcome to the section of Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Vermont Medical Center. Our mission is to prepare our residents to provide top notch care for critically ill ED patients. The care in the first few hours of the critically ill effect long-term outcomes. In rural settings, emergency physicians must be ready to independently stabilize and manage the sickest patients. In addition to our enthusiastic Emergency Medicine, Pulmonary, and Surgical Critical Care faculty, we have dually-boarded faculty in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care. We are all excited to teach you critical care medicine while you are rotating in the ICU or on a high acuity shift in the ED. Through ICU rotations, regular didactics, and procedural training you will graduate from our program ready to confidently manage the sickest patients throughout your career. 

For those with a particular interest in critical care medicine there will be opportunities for additional training, research, and critical care education. Our EM residents also have opportunities to pursue advanced critical care skills, such as Resuscitative Transesophageal Echocardiography Certification and Tele-health critical care consultations with surrounding community hospitals. If you choose to pursue a critical care fellowship, we will make sure you are well prepared.

Innovative Care Delivery

The Critical Care Transition (CCT) is a novel pilot project led by two of the Emergency Medicine/Critical Care Faculty, Dr. Katelin Morrissette and Dr. Skyler Lentz. This is an expanded version of the ED-ICU model which includes inpatient emergency consults and Tele-health support for regional network hospitals. Residents can rotate with this service to gain exposure to critically ill patients and experience in new clinical settings with didactic focus in quality improvement methods. This pilot project has been made possible by the culture of improvement, innovation, and high quality care in the University of Vermont Medical Center Emergency Department.
