What excites you about EM at UVM: The group, which is made up of smart, down to earth, good people who are invested in the program. The access to the outdoors is also incredible.
Future plans: Become the best EM physician I can, lots of ultrasound, explore new backcountry ski zones, and bike as much as possible.

Kunal Chohan

What excites you about EM at UVM: A kind and remarkable culture that puts people first. The opportunity to shape an emerging program. Experience practicing low resource medicine. Life in paradise here in Burlington.
Future plans: Survive and thrive through residency and winter. Learn to shred skiing. Become the kindest and most incredible EM physician I can be.

KC Collier

Hometown: Moved a bunch growing up both East and West Coasts
Medical school: Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth
Hobbies: Reading and walks by the lake, paddling, gardening, cooking and baking new recipes, spending time with family and friends, struggling at guitar, impromptu dance parties.
What excites you about EM at UVM: Being a part of a growing program with powerhouse faculty, wicked smart and fun residents in a beautiful place! What’s not to love!
Future plans: Enjoy residency and all the perks Vermont has to offer.

Stephen Hobson

Hometown: Flushing, Michigan
Medical School: University of Michigan Medical School
Hobbies: Spending time with my wife and son, going on family adventures and road trips, playing guitar and drums, reading science fiction, making my son laugh.
What excites you about EM at UVM: I first came to Vermont for a medical course at the Army Mountain Warfare School and absolutely loved the state. Everybody talks about finding the right “fit” for residency, and I definitely felt that with the faculty and residents at UVM.
Future plans: Explore opportunities as an EM doctor in wilderness medicine and medical education and enjoy the many outdoor activities Vermont has to offer!

Ashley McCormick

Hometown: West Chester, PA
Medical School: Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine
Hobbies: Reading, fly fishing, hiking, trail running, exploring local craft breweries, perfecting that first batch of morning coffee, bouldering, being a dog mom and crazy plant lady.
What excites you about EM at UVM: I could go on and on about everything that excites me about this program, but for those adult learners with short attention spans like me: I ultimately chose UVM for the people, the program philosophy, and the culture – this is a progressive and adaptable program that embraces the humanity of every patient, places equal value on each team member’s role to deliver optimal patient-centered care, and offers a support system chock full of mentors that truly care about their residents as human beings in and (especially) out of the hospital.
Future plans: Learn from the best, care for the community, and discover the best hazy IPA in Burlington.

Daniel Peters

What excites you about EM at UVM: The combination of innovative leadership, diverse clinical training sites, and outdoorsy-ness of Burlington make for an excellent residency experience. I’m excited to be part of a young, growing program with a team of supportive faculty physicians from a diverse set of backgrounds.
Future plans: Career-wise: hopefully a mix of academia/administration and community EM. Personally: spend as much time outside as possible; be an engaged community member.

Brittany Drath

Hometown: Green Bay, WI
Medical School: Medical College of Wisconsin
Hobbies: Running, biking, skiing, eating cake and playing with my dog Nala
What excites you about EM at UVM: It was clear from my interview that the faculty and residents are not only fun and welcoming people but also are invested in teaching and truly care about the patient experience. I am also excited about the global health opportunities and the community outreach work that is done at UVM.
Future plans: I hope to become the best patient advocate I can and learn from an incredibly diverse group of people. Additionally, I plan on continuing my work with victims of domestic violence and human trafficking. I hope to run the Vermont Marathon, get better at skiing, and explore a new restaurant scene.

Nicholas Lang

Hometown: Salem, NH
Medical School: Albany Medical College, Albany NY
Hobbies: Rock climbing, cycling, caving, cooking, hiking, podcasts and snowboarding
What excites you about EM at UVM: I’m excited to be a part of supportive and motivated community that prioritizes providing the highest quality of medical care to patients in both urban and rural settings. I also cannot wait to take advantage of the incredible access to the outdoors for year-round adventuring and relaxation.
Future plans: Work with the local first responder community to promote their health and wellness and spend as much time as possible learning to snowboard under the expert tutelage of my girlfriend Jacque.

Emily Straley

Hobbies: Hiking, biking, ski touring, soccer, attempting to keep my plants alive, backyard bonfires with family and friends
What excites you about EM at UVM: The faculty and staff at UVM are incredibly devoted to resident education and go above and beyond to train capable and caring EM physicians. UVM provides incredible opportunities to find your niche within the field of EM and work with diverse patient populations in resource-limited environments. The community within the residency program is unmatched - I couldn't think of a better group of people to spend time with both inside and outside the hospital.
Future plans: Learn as much as possible from my peers and mentors to become the best EM physician I can be. Take on new projects and research within the fields of global health, health equity, and critical care. Play outside and soak up every minute of Vermont beauty.

Colin Waters

Hometown: Rome, NY
Medical School: Tufts University School of Medicine, Maine Track Program
Hobbies: Sharing meals with family and friends, outdoor activities (running, climbing, and skiing), woodworking, and spending time with my wife and our dog.
What excites you about EM at UVM: UVM is a place where I can obtain excellent clinical training, develop diverse professional interests, and join a vibrant community. I am impressed by how passionate the faculty are about the training and well-being of residents and excited about the opportunities provided by an expanding and evolving program.
Future Plans: To be a community emergency medicine physician that dabbles in research, quality improvement, and projects that increase access to medical care. I also hope to dabble in hobby farming if my wife and I can settle our Jersey vs. Galloway cattle debate.

Christopher Whiting

What excites you about EM at UVM: I was really impressed with all the people I met on my interview day, specifically their enthusiasm for growing this younger program with down to earth faculty, staff, and residents and creating a kind and generous culture for each other and for patients. The outdoor access and livability of Burlington is also incredible.
Future Plans: Be a human sponge as I attempt to learn as much from the incredible faculty and patients at UVMMC. Continue to push myself outside the hospital to engage with my community, be the best husband possible, and explore the beautiful environment around Burlington.

Luke Wohlford

What excites you about EM at UVM: The sheer amount of opportunities here blows me away, especially in rural and low-resource EM. It’s also clear how the program was intentionally built to create amazing clinicians and I feel lucky to jump onboard.
Future plans: Adapt my hobbies from desert life to mountain life, become the best EM doc I can be, and serve my community however I can.

Alex Cavert

Hometown: Clifton Park, NY

What excites you about EM at UVM: There are so many things that I could put here but I am most excited about working along side some of the best physicians in all of emergency medicine. The program is being built on a foundation of truly incredible people who are passionate, caring and down to earth and I am so excited to be a part of this family. Otherwise, I am looking forward to time in the ICU, the great wilderness medicine opportunities, getting involved with local SAR as well as spending time at our rural sites.
Future plans: Continue to grow both as a person and as a new doctor. Soak up as much knowledge as possible from the great people around me. Spend time exploring with my partner, Olivia, and dog, Maisie. Ride new trails, ski with friends, work in the garden and enjoy life in this great place!

Zac Clark

Hometown: Barrington, NH
Medical school: University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine
Hobbies: Climbing, running, hiking, fly fishing, XC skiing, snowboarding and most importantly spending time with my family.
What excites you about EM at UVM: I am very excited about the people here. I remember walking away from my interview day really feeling a sense of belonging and connection with each of my interviewers. Additionally, I love the opportunity that I will have at UVM to train across the resource spectrum as I believe it will really prepare me to be an exceptional physician regardless of my future work environment. Lastly, can you really beat Burlington if you love spending time outdoors?
Future plans: Long term, my wife and I hope to stay in Northern Vermont after residency. Right now I think that I would like to ultimately practice in the community and critical access setting. Outside of work, I’m hoping to complete my first Ultra distance race and climb some of the amazing boulders Vermont has to offer!

Sarah Janouris

Hometown: Arlington, TX
Medical school: Baylor College of Medicine
Hobbies: Backpacking, kayaking, biking, learning how to play in the snow, reading, jigsaw puzzles, exploring farmers’ markets, and sitting on the back porch with my husband and watching our dogs frolic.
What excites you about EM at UVM: After my interview day, I felt incredibly peaceful when I thought about the program and the welcoming people at UVM. I felt like I would be challenged to reach my full potential as an EM doc and encouraged to explore any interest within the field, whether that be critical care or rural medicine. I was also struck by the program’s emphasis on recognizing our patients as individuals and integrating the art of bedside manner into the teaching culture. Not to mention the incredible outdoor access that Vermont offers to balance the challenges of residency!
Future plans: Learn how to be a doctor while never forgetting to sit at the bedside, master the bunny slopes, continue to upgrade our outdoor gear, make pancakes worthy of Vermont maple syrup, and always appreciate the small moments in life with my husband and our 2 furry dogs.

Mary Kate Kosciusko

Hometown: West Cornwall, CT
Medical school: University of Connecticut School of Medicine
Hobbies: Hiking, backpacking, peak bagging, skiing, listening to podcasts, reading, needle arts, working out, and really anything outside.
What excites you about EM at UVM: I am SO excited to jump into the issues surrounding healthcare in rural America. Coming from a small town that is struggling to keep its physicians and facilities, this topic is near and dear to my heart. I also can’t wait to join a like-minded community of avid outdoorspeople! Who wouldn’t be sold on the flannels and mountains.
Future plans: There will likely be much ultrasound, EMS, and rural medicine involved . . .

Joe Lovelace

Hometown: Boise, Idaho
Medical school: University of Utah School of Medicine
Hobbies: You can usually find me outside hiking, backpacking, rock and ice climbing, mountain biking, backcountry/alpine/cross country skiing, whitewater kayaking, scuba diving, spearfishing, fly fishing, and hunting. I hoard duplicates of any gear I can get my hands on and I’m always ready to take beginners out! I’m also passionate about cooking, outdoor photography, and playing jazz upright bass.
What excites you about EM at UVM: I was absolutely blown away by my away rotation. Every single attending and resident I worked with felt like the nicest, most encouraging mentors I had interacted with in all of medical school. The didactics, sim, and cadaver lab experiences were like nothing I’ve ever seen, and my on-shift exposure included higher acuity and variety than I would expect to see in a city ten times the size.
Future plans: Become the most versatile EM doc possible to thrive in any hospital setting, overcome my fear of ice skating, and raise some chickens.

Emily Speck

Hometown: West Newbury, VT
Medical school: SUNY Upstate Medical University
Hobbies: Going uphill and downhill using various modes of transportation (feet, bike, skis, etc.) with my fur pal Evie, being on or near water, coffee coffee coffee, and spending time with my favorite people!
What excites you about EM at UVM: The folks at UVM are some of the most supportive, intelligent, humble, generous, and enthusiastic people I have worked with. Their dedication to teaching and patient care is evident in every aspect of the residency program. I cannot imagine a better environment to learn how to be an Emergency Medicine physician! As an added bonus, when my away rotation began with a mountain bike ride, I knew I had found a pretty special place.
Future plans: Continue my work with search and rescue/wilderness medicine, integrate my passion for women’s health into my Emergency Medicine practice, adventure in the Green Mountains, and soak up all every ounce of knowledge from the brilliant minds at UVM!
