Message from the Chair
The Department of Medicine has a long and proud tradition of leadership in innovative clinical care, education and training, and cutting edge research.
Our clinical mission is to deliver the highest quality clinical care to patients in our region, including access to innovative research and cutting edge technology and new programs.
The Department of Medicine has a number of major research programs with funding from the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense and foundations that fund basic and translational research programs that are recognized around the country.
We perform clinical trials that give our patients access to new and emerging treatments that target a number of diseases.
Education is a major mission for the department, we are proud of our outstanding medicine residency programs, and excellent subspecialty fellowship training: training future outstanding clinicians, basic and translational researchers, and educators

- Part of the team that established CRP as a cardiovascular risk factor
- First regional, multi-institutional, laboratory-based registry of diabetes patients
- Oldest primary care track IM Residency program
- First description of a role of histamine receptors in autoimmunity
- First description of impaired myocardial calcium transport in human heart failure
- Demonstrated first decrease in mortality from CHD in the country as a result of the institution of statewide CCU's.
