The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at The University of Vermont and The University of Vermont Medical Center is committed to excellence in teaching, research, service and the practice of clinical and anatomic pathology. We integrate academic medicine into patient care and the education of future health care providers and medical researchers.

Education

Our focus is on educational excellence for under-graduate, medical, graduate and post-graduate students. As a major educational resource to the health care professionals in the region and nation, our educational efforts focus on the development of critical thinkers with strong problem solving skills.

Science

Research

We excel in clinical and basic disease-related research. We align clinical research with the goals of the clinical enterprise and actively engage our clinical faculty. Basic research is focused in three areas: redox biology and pathology, cardiovascular disease, and histology research support. We actively engage residents and medical students.

Patient Care

We are a regional resource for laboratory diagnosis and treatment of human disease through our teaching and clinical partner The University of Vermont Medical Center. We provide complete, state-of-the-art diagnostic, consultative and therapeutic services, and work with providers to establish cost-effective high quality programs.

Dr's Leonard and HuberA Remarkable Gift from Dr. Sally Huber, Ph.D.

At the end of Research Day (2018), Dr. Leonard gave a surprise announcement: a very generous bequest of $5 million by research faculty emerita, Dr. Sally Huber! The funds will go toward two endowed professorships for junior investigators in our department. The endowments will be named for her parents, Elmer R. Huber and Blodwen S. Huber, and will support junior research faculty for five years.

This amazing support will allow junior faculty time and funds to gain independence while pursuing the milestone achievement of being awarded their first R01 grant. (9/2018)

2024 Annual Pathology Research Day

A successful 7th Annual Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Research Day event held in the UVM Davis Center. Pathology Highlights

Congratulations to Dr. Doug Taatjes, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and Director of UVM’s Center for Biomedical Shared Resources, was recently appointed to serve on the strategic planning advisory group for the National Institutes of Health Office of Research Infrastructure Programs (ORIP). This group is responsible for developing a strategic plan for 2026–2030. Taatjes was selected specifically for Phase II of the plan, titled “Innovative Instruments and Equipment to Accelerate Research Discoveries.” His contribution to the advisory group is to explore various approaches, assess challenges, and devise actionable strategies to optimize programs within ORIP’s Division of Construction and Instruments (DCI).

DCI supports essential research infrastructure in two areas: Instrumentation Programs, which facilitate the acquisition of advanced research instruments through the S10 activity code; and Equipment Programs, which support the purchase of modern equipment to enhance shared-use biomedical research facilities using the S15 code (previously R24). Congratulations to Dr. Pam Gibson, M.D., on receiving the A. Bradley Soule Award during the Alumni Celebration. This award is presented to an alum whose loyalty and dedication to The Larner College of Medicine most emulate those qualities as found in the Award's first recipient, A. Bradley Soule, M.D., 1928. Congratulations to Dr. Bronwyn Bryant, M.D., Associate Professor, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, on receiving a $30,000 2024 ChangeMedEd Initiative Innovation Grant. This is a program initiated by the American Medical Association to highlight the need for transformative changes in medical education to prepare future physicians for our rapidly evolving healthcare landscape. Dr. Juli-Anne Gardner, M.D., Dr. Pamela Gibson, M.D., and Alicia Hill, Charge Medical Lab Scientist, had a well received presentation at the Joint Annual Meeting of three medical laboratory science professional societies, ASCLS, AGT, and SAFMLS in July. They did an interactive session on "Introduction to Health/HealthCare Equity: How Laboratorians Can Play a Vital Role in Eliminating Disparities". (8/2024)

Congratulations to Dr. Deborah L. Cook, M.D., Professor, Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, on being named the inaugural Allison and Matthew S.
